Support for local family facing loss of beloved mother

Sun Sep 12 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

we went out to visit Alan Barkiss and his children, George and Pippa. Sadly last month Alan's partner and mother to his children; Michelle Barkiss passed away after catching COVID-19.
We were contacted by various individuals asking if we could help in any way after the difficult circumstances they have been put through. Of course we didn't give it a second thought and contacted the family right away asking how we could help. Alan said it was their goal to take their children away on a family holiday together, we have made that possible. We have gifted the family a voucher for a Centre Parcs holiday for when they are ready, to spend some quality time together and reminisce on their happy memories of their mam.
"Michelle was a fantastic nurse and is going to be a huge miss at Deerbolt, she worked throughout the pandemic since the early days putting other people before herself!" -one of Michelle's colleagues
Our thoughts are with the Barkiss family

Treehouse Surprise for Family

Tue Sep 07 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

We have been out to visit Joanne who was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in May 2020.
After major surgery she underwent chemotherapy, which had to be stopped as she had developed pancreatitis. A further tumour was then found on her ovary which she had surgery to remove, during surgery her bowel was injured and Joanne ended up being ventilated in ITU after an emergency procedure saved her life.

Unfortunately, her ovary biopsy came back showing her cancer had progressed to stage 4. Joanne is currently having fortnightly chemotherapy and is resigned to staying at home as she cannot expose her skin to sunlight due to her treatment.

Angel Trust have presented Joanne with a stay in our treehouse at Ramside Hall Hotel, where she can spend some special time with her family after the difficult year she has been through. Joanne wants to to use this experience to say thank you to her amazing family who have helped her through this journey.
We hope you have a wonderful time relaxing at your treehouse stay!

Angel Trust are proud to be flying the NHS flag at our hub in Bishop Auckland
Today we were joined by the Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councilor Katie Eliot who will be fundraising over the next year to raise money for the Durham and Darlington NHS foundation with a primary focus on Bishop Auckland Hospital.

The 5th July 1948 was an historic moment in our country’s history, as it was the day our pioneering National Health Service (NHS) was born, bringing free healthcare to all. It has been treasured every year since, but never more so than since March 2020 when the Coronavirus pandemic gripped the UK and changed everyone’s lives

Luxury Treehouse stay for Leukaemia survivor

Mon Jul 05 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

A couple of weeks ago some members of our team went out to meet Connor and his family to award them with an overnight stay in the Angel Trust Treehouse at Ramside Hall Hotel
Connor was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia 2017 when he was only 13 years old. Connor was top of his class and loved playing rugby for his school and for a local team. During his treatment Connor suffered many side effects of the chemotherapy. He developed appendicitis and had his appendix removed. He developed sepsis and had to spend days in ICU. He developed and still has peripheral neuropathy which prevents brain signal to the legs and feet from working. He ended up in a wheelchair and having to be carried upstairs by his parents, following this he developed a blood clot on his brain, which resulted in daily injections for three months. The doctors thought this had gone and continued with treatment. It returned and then spread. Connor had to have injections of blood thinners for a year. He ended up in ICU again, as they had to control the thinners to prevent a stroke.
Connor's mam Jocelyn said "Throughout all this Connor never complained once. His treatment lasted for 3.5 years and he rang the bell for end of treatment on 16th February 2021. He hated being in a wheelchair and vowed that he would be back up walking. He put in the hard work and wearing splints, and is now able to walk unaided He is so determined and positive, he is our hero."
We hope you enjoy your stay and have some much-needed relaxation time with your family along with a game of golf with your dad!

Tonight two of our ambassadors; Mark and Michelle went out to visit Julie to give her a little surprise.
Earlier this year Julie broke both of her arms after a fall at home, during her recovery she had to put everything on hold to take care of her parents who had both become seriously ill at the same time, Sadly Julies father passed away following his illness.
Throughout all of this Julie worked tirelessly looking after her family whilst also working as a teaching assistant.

Sun Jun 06 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Julie has recently been diagnosed with cancer and within a few days was told that it is untreatable. Julie’s been a nurse and worked in care for 30 years and has even worked through the entire pandemic on the frontline not knowing she had cancer so was at a massive risk.! We are beyond relief she didn’t catch covid"
We wanted to treat Julie and her family to an overnight stay at the Angel Trust Treehouse to allow them to spend some quality time together and finally relax after what they have been through these past few months!

Specialist swing funded for local family

Sun Apr 25 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

A few weeks ago we funded a special needs swing for a family in Newton Aycliffe with thanks to our generous donors and fundraisers! We have just received some pictures of Sofia from her mam who would like to share her thanks;
"We would like to say a HUGE thank you to The Angel Trust and all of its supporters. Sofia absolutely loves the swing and it means a lot to us as it makes her so happy"
20 month old Sofia has an extremely rare metabolic disease called Non Ketotic Hyperglycinemia, which is a life limiting condition that causes global development delay, low muscle tone, problems with eating and seizures. Due to this Sofia needs extra support and cannot use regular childrens equipment.
The special needs swing allows Sofia to play outside and feel like a 'typical' toddler whilst working on her vestibular, Which is essential especially as she has been shielding at home for over a year.

Making memories for 18 year old Jamie

Tue Apr 20 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

What an honour it was to visit 18-year-old Jamie Dowson and his family to surprise them with an overnight stay in the Angel Trust Tree House. Jamie was diagnosed last year with Grade 4 Gioblastoma prior to his diagnosis Jamie was a fit, healthy young man, enjoying college, learning to drive and a weekend job at the local railway station.
One Saturday morning Jamie didn’t feel well and collapsed; they discovered the devastating news Jamie had a brain tumour. Jamie then had brain surgery followed by radio therapy and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, due to his treatment and shielding Jamie didn’t get chance to celebrate his 18th Birthday. We hope you can celebrate your Birthday in the Tree House with your family and make some amazing memories.
Clair Mcgregor visited Jamie with Ellie Anderson a volunteer at the trust. Clair commented “it was a very emotional visit, with neighbours recognising us and cheering before we rang the doorbell. Mam and dad crying as soon as they opened the door. It is a visit I will never forget, Jamie you’re a remarkable brave young man.”
It’s fantastic that Angel Trust can direct funds raised from the local community to create magical moments like this.

Angel Trust adopt luxury treehouse

Thu Apr 08 2021 23:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

For almost 3 years our trustees have wanted to give our community a retreat, an escape and a little indulgence. We thought maybe a caravan or a chalet but then we unanimously decided we wanted to give you more!
We at Angel Trust are super excited to reveal not only have we secured a luxury getaway but we have adopted our very own luxury treehouse at Ramside Hall Hotel, to be used by members of our community that are in need of a break, an escape or a retreat.
Our board of trustees will carefully select from applications made for a family/group to take a well-deserved break in The Angel Trust Treehouse.
Applications may well be a family that is going through a difficult time or this accommodation could pose as respite from whatever difficulties someone is currently facing, or maybe you know someone who has gone above and beyond and really deserves some ‘me time’ to show their efforts have not gone unnoticed.
The Angel Trust Treehouse will allow people to take time out and look after them! To prevent becoming tired, exhausted, run down, but could also be used as a family bonding experience to spend much needed time away with their loved ones.
We at Angel Trust truly want to give back the very best we can, and by adding a luxury Treehouse as an escape for the people of our community is definitely something to be proud of.
Please contact us if you would like to submit an application form:

Tue Mar 09 2021 00:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Our ambassador Tess Tickle met with Louise and her 16-year-old son (socially distanced and following government guidelines).
Louise was diagnosed with cervical cancer in November 2019 unfortunately the illness progressed and in November 2020 Louise was told that she was terminal and would have between 12-18 months to live. During this period Louise moved in with her sister for support and care however, when the time had come for Louise to return to her home, she discovered that her home had been burgled and most of her belongings had been taken.
She has now managed to gain tenancy for a new property and with the help of Macmillan Joining the Dots has gained some second hand furniture but was still in need of a Fridge/Freezer and Dryer which are essential for Louise to have due to the progression of her cancer.
This is where Angel Trust come in, we have donated a Fridge/Freezer and Dryer to Louise to take the financial strain away from her but also to help her to remain as independent as possible and take care of her son.
This is where your donations go... to local people in need that just need a helping hand!
